About AppFlowy
What it is
AppFlowy is an open-source collaborative workspace — documents, databases, boards and AI assistance — built as an alternative to Notion for people who want their data on their own infrastructure. It can be self-hosted, runs natively rather than in a browser tab, and works offline.
Why it's different
Self-hosting is the reason to choose it, and it is a good one: a workspace accumulates the most sensitive writing an organisation does, and for some teams a US-hosted SaaS is simply not an option. Being a native application rather than a web view also makes it noticeably faster than the thing it replaces, which people notice daily. The trade is maturity. Notion has years more polish, a far larger template and integration ecosystem, and reliable mobile apps; AppFlowy is catching up and is visibly younger in places. Self-hosting also means you run it, back it up and upgrade it.
How people use it
It suits privacy-conscious teams, organisations with data residency requirements, and individuals who would rather own their notes than rent them. The realistic approach is to try the hosted version first to judge whether the feature set covers what you actually use, then self-host if it does — migrating away later is the expensive direction.
