About CartAI
What it is
CartAI is a developer API that allows AI agents to complete real transactions on live merchant websites — checkout, subscriptions, invoice and bill payment, order submission — without the merchant integrating anything. Most shopping agents stop at finding a product; CartAI is aimed at clearing the purchase.
Why it's different
Completing a transaction is where agentic commerce has been stuck, because a demonstration that finds a product and then hands you a link has automated the easy half. Doing it without merchant cooperation is what makes it deployable at all, since no startup can get integration from every retailer. The risks are proportionate and should not be glossed over: this means an automated process holding payment credentials and committing real money on sites that did not consent to being transacted with programmatically. That raises questions about authorisation, chargebacks, merchant terms of service and who is liable when an agent buys the wrong thing — and those answers are not settled anywhere in this field.
How people use it
It is used by developers building shopping and procurement agents, and by automation over recurring purchasing — restocking, bill payment, subscription management. The responsible pattern is a human confirmation before money moves, at least until the failure modes are understood, along with strict spend limits. Anyone building on it should read the target merchants' terms, because the tool will not do that for you.
