About ChatGPT

What it is

ChatGPT is a chat window you type into and get written answers back from. You can ask it to explain something, rewrite an email, summarise a long document you paste in, draft a plan, or talk through a problem. It also handles images, files and voice. For most people it is the first AI tool they ever use, and it is a reasonable place to start because almost everything it does is available without paying.

Why it's different

It is the default rather than the specialist. Nothing here is the best available at any single job — other tools write better code, search more reliably, or generate better images — but very little else does this many things acceptably well in one place. That breadth is the point: you do not have to know which tool you need before you start. The trade-off is that it will state wrong facts confidently, so anything checkable should be checked.

How people use it

The strongest everyday use is reshaping something you already have: paste in messy notes and ask for a polite email, paste a long thread and ask what you are being asked to do. It is also the fastest way to understand a form, a contract clause or an error message, because you can keep asking follow-up questions. At work, people use it for first drafts of repetitive writing and for turning meeting notes into actions. Give it the material rather than asking it to recall facts.
