What it is
Chegg is a study subscription built from a textbook rental business. Chegg Study offers a library of over 100 million expert-written solutions across fifty-odd subjects, alongside AI-generated answers, writing and citation tools, and textbook rental. For years it was the default place American students went when stuck on a problem set.
Why it's different
Its remaining advantage is the solution library: those answers were written by people against specific textbook problems, and for a question from a named edition they are usually more reliable than a chatbot reasoning from scratch. That is a real asset. It is also an asset in visible decline, and it is worth being blunt about why — free chatbots answer most of the same questions well enough, and Chegg's business has contracted sharply as a result. There is the academic honesty question too: Chegg has been central to university cheating investigations, and institutions do monitor its use.
How people use it
The legitimate use is a worked solution to a problem you have already attempted, to find where you went wrong on a question type you will meet again in an exam. The textbook rental side remains straightforwardly useful and unrelated to any of the above. Anyone subscribing today should check first whether a free chatbot handles their subject adequately, because for most it now does.
