What it is
ElevenLabs turns written text into spoken audio that sounds close to a real person. You paste a script, choose a voice, and get an audio file. It handles many languages, can adjust delivery and pacing, and can create a voice from a recording sample.
Why it's different
The quality is the reason it is known. Older text-to-speech is instantly recognisable as a machine; this generally is not, which changes what it can be used for — narration people will actually listen to rather than merely tolerate. That also makes the voice cloning genuinely sensitive: recreating someone's voice without their agreement is both an ethical problem and, in a growing number of places, a legal one. Only clone a voice you have clear permission to use.
