What it is
Gemini is Google's AI assistant. It answers questions, writes and rewrites text, explains things, and works with images and documents you upload. Its distinguishing feature is that it is wired into the Google products many people already live in — Gmail, Docs, Drive and Search — so it can act on your own material rather than only on what you paste into a box.
Why it's different
The integration is the reason to choose it. If your work already sits in Google Drive, Gemini can draft a reply in Gmail with the thread as context, or summarise a document without you copying anything anywhere. It also tends to be more current on recent events than assistants without live search behind them. If you do not use Google's tools, most of that advantage disappears and it becomes one more capable chat assistant among several.
How people use it
Inside Gmail to draft or shorten a reply with the conversation already in view. Inside Docs to expand notes into prose or tighten something overwritten. Uploading a PDF and asking what it says and what it asks of you. On a phone, as a replacement for the assistant that came with it, where being able to ask a follow-up question is the actual improvement. As with any assistant, verify specifics before acting on them.
