About Microsoft Copilot

What it is

Microsoft Copilot is Microsoft's AI assistant. In its free form it is a chat window that answers questions, writes text and generates images. Its more useful form lives inside Microsoft 365 — Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Teams — where it works on the documents, spreadsheets and meetings you already have rather than on text you paste in.

Why it's different

The reason to use it is that your work is already in Microsoft's tools. Copilot can summarise a Teams meeting you missed, draft a reply in Outlook with the thread in context, or build a first-pass slide deck from a Word document. No standalone assistant can do that without you moving files around. The in-app version is a paid add-on, and much of the value depends on your organisation having enabled it.

How people use it

Catching up on a meeting that ran without you, which is the feature people notice first. Turning a long document into slides, then fixing the slides by hand. Drafting routine email replies inside Outlook. In Excel, describing what you want rather than remembering a formula. Treat everything it produces as a first draft written by someone who did not attend, and check anything with a number in it.
