About Midjourney

What it is

Midjourney generates images from written descriptions. You describe what you want and it returns several interpretations, which you can then refine, vary, or upscale. It began on Discord and now has its own website, which is a much gentler starting point.

Why it's different

It is the one with taste. Competing generators are often more literal and more controllable; Midjourney tends to produce a more striking image than you asked for, which is either exactly what you want or exactly what you do not. For mood, illustration and concept work it is unusually strong. For an image that must match a precise specification, its habit of interpreting is a hindrance rather than a help. There is no free tier.

How people use it

Concept art, book and album covers, mood boards, and illustrations where an evocative image matters more than an exact one. Marketing and social imagery when stock photography feels tired. People iterate: generate, pick the closest, vary it, repeat. Be careful using generated images of real people or recognisable brands, and check the terms before using output commercially.
