What it is
Perplexity is a search engine that answers in sentences instead of returning a list of links, and shows numbered sources for what it says. You ask a question, you get a short written answer, and every claim carries a citation you can click to see where it came from. It will also keep context across follow-up questions, so you can dig into a topic without restating it each time.
Why it's different
The citations are the whole product. Most AI assistants produce fluent answers with no way to tell which parts are true, which is the single biggest problem with using them for research. Here the sources sit next to the claims, so checking takes seconds rather than being impossible. It is not immune to getting things wrong — a citation can be real and still not support the sentence attached to it — but it is the difference between verifiable and not.
How people use it
For questions you would otherwise open six tabs for: comparing options, checking whether something is still true, or getting oriented in an unfamiliar subject before reading properly. It is genuinely good for recent events, where assistants working from training data alone are unreliable. People also use it as the first step of research and then read the cited sources themselves, which is the right way round.
