About Retool

What it is

Retool assembles internal applications from prebuilt components wired directly to your databases, APIs and model providers. Apps can be built visually, generated from a prompt, or produced by a coding agent through its MCP server, and deployed inside your own environment with access controls.

Why it's different

Internal tools are the work nobody wants to staff: important, unglamorous, and endless. Retool's argument is that the interface is not the interesting part and should be assembled rather than written, which is right far more often than engineers like to admit. Where it stops being right is when the tool becomes a product - performance, custom interaction and per-seat cost all start to bite, and by then it is load-bearing. Know which side of that line a build is on before starting.

How people use it

Admin panels, support dashboards and internal CRUD over an existing database. Operations tools that would otherwise be a spreadsheet and a prayer. Anything where the users are your own staff. Connect it to a read replica rather than the primary database, because a generated query against production is a generated query against production.
