Subframe
A UI design canvas built on real code primitives, so what a designer draws exports as React a developer can ship.
Highlights
- AI-native UI design with Figma-like visual canvas
- Code-grade primitives — components reflect actual production code structure, not just pixels
- Production-quality React/Tailwind export with clean type-safe code
- Prompt-to-component generation with iterative refinement
- Y Combinator alum; founded by ex-Vercel and ex-Stripe design engineers
- Popular with design-engineering teams at modern SaaS startups
- Targets the design-eng handoff that traditional Figma flows handle poorly

About Subframe
What it is
Subframe is a UI design tool with a Figma-like canvas, but its components are code-grade primitives rather than shapes — what you arrange reflects the structure of production code. It generates components from prompts, lets you refine them by direct manipulation, and exports typed React and Tailwind intended to be implemented as-is rather than rebuilt.
Why it's different
The gap it targets is the oldest one in product work: a designer hands over a file, a developer rebuilds it approximately, and the result differs from the design in a hundred small ways nobody has time to argue about. Because Subframe's canvas is code underneath, the export is the design rather than an interpretation of it. The constraint that follows is real — you cannot draw anything the underlying primitives cannot express, which is frustrating for exploratory visual work. It also assumes React and Tailwind; on any other stack the main benefit evaporates.
How people use it
It suits small product teams where the same people do design and implementation, and teams already standardised on React and Tailwind who want the design system and the codebase to be one thing. The usual flow is generating a first version from a prompt, adjusting it visually, then exporting into the repository. It is a poor fit for early brand and concept exploration, where being unconstrained is the whole point.
