Why it's different
Two things distinguish it in a category dominated by Cursor, Copilot and Claude Code. It covers the whole loop rather than generation alone — planning before and testing and review after are where most AI-written code actually fails, and a tool that writes tests is more useful than one that writes more code. And it spans several surfaces plus connected work tools, so context can come from the issue tracker rather than only the open file. The honest position is that this is a crowded and fast-moving category where the incumbents have enormous distribution, and any feature comparison written today is out of date within a quarter. Judge it on your own repository, because performance on real legacy code differs sharply from performance in a demo.
How people use it
It is used for the tasks that benefit from a loop rather than a completion — adding test coverage, working through a well-specified ticket, mechanical refactors. JetBrains support matters to a large population of developers that most AI coding tools serve poorly.
