About Bright Data

What it is

Bright Data provides the infrastructure for collecting public web data: a large proxy network spanning residential, mobile and data-centre addresses, scraper APIs that return structured results, pre-built datasets, and a Web MCP server so agents can fetch pages directly. Founded in 2014 as Luminati Networks and rebranded in 2021.

Why it's different

It is the largest and most capable operator in this space, and the reason to use it is that the sites worth scraping defend themselves and a self-built scraper loses that fight. The thing to understand before signing up is where residential proxy capacity comes from: it is people's home connections, supplied through SDKs embedded in free apps in exchange for consent that is, at best, buried. Bright Data is more transparent about this than most and has been through litigation over it. It is your decision to make knowingly. Scraping also carries terms-of-service and copyright exposure that is yours, not the vendor's, and the pricing escalates sharply with volume.

How people use it

It is used for price monitoring, market research, training-data collection and giving agents reliable access to pages that block ordinary requests. The pre-built datasets are the underrated option — often cheaper and immediate where someone has already collected what you need. Before building anything, check the target's robots.txt and terms, and rate-limit to something a site would not notice, because the ethics and the durability of the access point the same way.
