What it is
Google AI Studio is a free web environment for prototyping with the Gemini model family: writing and running prompts, adjusting parameters, working with images, audio and video, generating media, and getting an API key to move the same call into code. It replaced MakerSuite in 2023.
Why it's different
Its real advantage is the lowest barrier to entry of any frontier lab's tooling — free, no card, a working API key in a minute, and a generous free tier behind it. For anyone learning how these models behave, that matters more than any feature. The multimodal handling is also genuinely ahead: uploading a long video and asking questions about it is something the interface makes trivial and most competitors do not offer at all. Two honest caveats. The free tier's terms allow Google to use your data to improve its products, which rules it out for anything confidential — the paid path does not. And it is deliberately a prototyping surface, not a production one; Vertex AI is where Google expects serious workloads.
How people use it
It is used to test whether an idea works before writing any code, to compare Gemini against whatever you currently use on your own prompts, and for one-off tasks over long documents, video or audio where the context window does the work.
