About Multiverse Computing
What it is
Multiverse Computing builds quantum and quantum-inspired software for finance, energy and life sciences — optimisation problems and, notably, model compression techniques derived from quantum physics that run on ordinary hardware. It raised a $215M Series B, among the largest rounds in the field.
Why it's different
The distinction that matters is quantum-inspired. Quantum computing has been promised for a decade with little near-term enterprise use, and a company depending on working quantum hardware is selling a future. Multiverse's more interesting work uses mathematics from quantum physics, tensor networks in particular, on classical computers today — a real technique with real results in compressing large models. Judge it on that rather than on the quantum branding, which does a lot of work in the marketing. Anything genuinely requiring quantum hardware should be read as research.
How people use it
The practically relevant use is model compression: making a large model small enough to run where it otherwise could not, on constrained hardware or at lower cost. That is a live problem with a growing set of solutions, and the comparison worth running is against conventional quantisation and distillation on your own workload. The optimisation work in finance and energy is a consulting engagement rather than a product.
