What it is
Palantir AIP lets organisations use large language models on their private networks and against their own operational data, within the access controls and audit requirements they already run. It sits on Palantir's existing data platform, so models operate over data that is already modelled, permissioned and logged rather than over an exported copy.
Why it's different
The argument is governance rather than model quality. A general chatbot cannot be pointed at regulated operational data, and the work of making that safe — permissions, lineage, audit, keeping it inside the network — is most of the project. AIP inherits that from a platform the customer already runs, which is a real advantage and also a closed one: essentially nothing here is available unless you are already a Palantir customer, with the contract, the implementation and the cost that implies. Palantir is also a company some organisations will not work with for reasons unrelated to the technology, which is a legitimate input to the decision.
How people use it
It is used in defence, government, healthcare and industrial operations where the data cannot leave and every access must be accountable. The pattern is applying models to decisions already represented in the platform — supply chain, logistics, case management — rather than as a general assistant. Deployments are projects with Palantir engineers in them, not configurations.
