Semrush is the biggest listed SEO and visibility software company. Its platform covers the classic toolkit — keyword research, rank tracking, site audits, backlinks, competitor analysis — and now tracks brand visibility inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Overviews as a first-class surface.
Why it's different
Its advantage is the index. SEO tools are only as good as the crawl data behind them, that is enormously expensive to build, and Semrush has one of the largest — which is why its keyword volumes and competitive data are more trustworthy than a newer entrant's however similar the feature list looks. Adding AI visibility to an existing dataset is also a stronger position than a startup measuring AI answers with no search data to correlate against. The costs are real: it is expensive, it is genuinely overwhelming for a small site, and a great deal of what you pay for will never be opened. The AI visibility methodology is as unproven as everyone else's.
How people use it
It suits agencies and in-house teams who need the numbers regularly and can justify a seat. The honest guidance for a small site is that a free Search Console account plus a cheaper tool covers most of what you will act on. Where Semrush earns its price is competitive research and the breadth of keyword data, not the dashboards.
