What it is
Symbolab solves mathematical problems and breaks the solution into steps. You can type mathematical notation, describe the problem in plain language, or photograph it. It covers algebra, calculus, trigonometry, geometry, statistics and physics, and includes a chat assistant that will explain any individual step you do not follow, plus graphing and practice problems.
Why it's different
Compared with Mathway, the nearest equivalent, Symbolab is organised around the working rather than the answer, and the ability to ask why about a particular line is the most genuinely educational feature in this category. Its notation rendering is also better for anything involving integrals or matrices. The limitations are real though: the most useful step-by-step depth sits behind a subscription, it does well on procedural problems and much less well on proofs or anything requiring insight, and like every solver it will occasionally misparse a photographed problem and answer a different question with complete confidence.
How people use it
The use that actually helps is working a problem yourself, getting stuck, and using the steps to find where your reasoning diverged rather than copying the result. It is strongest on the mechanical middle of long calculations — integration by parts, matrix operations, series — where a slip is invisible but fatal. Always check what it read from a photograph before trusting the answer.
