About Wolfram|Alpha
What it is
Wolfram Alpha answers questions by computing them. Maths, physics, chemistry, statistics, units, finance, nutrition, geography and more are handled by algorithms over a curated knowledge base, and it will show the steps of a solution rather than only the result.
Why it's different
It is the counterexample to everything else in this directory, and that is exactly why it is worth knowing. A language model predicts what an answer looks like; this computes one, so it is either right or it tells you it cannot parse the question - it does not invent a plausible number. For anything quantitative that is a categorical difference. The cost is that you must phrase things in a way it understands, and outside its curated domains it simply has nothing to say.
How people use it
Checking any figure an assistant produced. Maths homework where the working matters more than the answer. Unit conversions, dates and quick reference data. Reach for it whenever a chatbot gives you a number, because a computed answer and a predicted one look identical and only one of them is checkable.
