About Pinecone
What it is
Pinecone is a fully managed vector database for storing embeddings and retrieving them by similarity, now with full-text search in the same index so hybrid retrieval does not require a second system. There is no infrastructure to run, and it integrates with the common assistant and agent frameworks.
Why it's different
It was the first of these to be genuinely easy, and that is still the pitch: no cluster, no tuning, no capacity planning. For a team whose problem is shipping retrieval rather than operating a database, that is the right trade. The counter-argument has strengthened, though - Postgres extensions and open engines now cover a lot of the same ground for less, and being fully managed means no self-hosted escape hatch if the pricing stops working for you.
How people use it
Retrieval-augmented generation without an infrastructure team. Semantic search over documents or products. Agent memory. Be deliberate about what you store alongside each vector, because metadata you did not index is metadata you cannot filter on later without reprocessing everything.
