About Sourcegraph

What it is

Sourcegraph indexes an organisation's code and lets you search it as one body - by pattern, by symbol, or in natural language - then act on what you find. Batch Changes applies the same edit across many repositories at once, and its code graph is exposed to AI agents through an MCP server.

Why it's different

The problem it solves only exists past a certain size: when the code is in one repository, a local search is fine. Past a few dozen, nobody knows where anything is, and the cost of a cross-cutting change is finding every instance rather than making the edit. Batch Changes is the part that pays for itself. It is priced and built for organisations, and for a solo developer the honest answer is that ripgrep is free and sufficient.

How people use it

Finding every use of a deprecated API before removing it. Security and dependency sweeps across many services. Onboarding engineers into unfamiliar code. Run a batch change against a handful of repositories first, because the review burden of a bad change applied everywhere is worse than the work it saved.
