What it is
Zilliz Cloud is a fully managed service built on Milvus, the open-source vector database its team maintains. It stores embeddings and runs similarity search at billion-vector scale, with a free tier, and runs on the major clouds or inside your own account.
Why it's different
Being the managed version of the open-source engine is the honest advantage: the exit is a self-hosted Milvus rather than a rewrite, which is not true of most proprietary vector stores. Against that, vector search has become a feature of databases people already run, and for a few hundred thousand vectors adding a separate managed service is more operational surface than the problem deserves. The case strengthens sharply with scale.
How people use it
Retrieval over a large document or image corpus. Recommendation and deduplication at scale. Semantic search where a Postgres extension has stopped keeping up. Start on the free tier with real data rather than a sample, because vector search behaviour changes with volume in ways a toy dataset will not show.
